Dr. Percy Frank Walters MONROE - Dr. Percy Frank Walters, 84, of Monroe, NC, died Friday November 9, 2012. He was born in Monroe on March 16, 1928, as the youngest son of Beulah Baucom and Frank Wayne Walters. He was a graduate of Monroe High School, attended Mars Hill College and graduated from Furman University in 1949. Dr. Walters graduated from the Baltimore School of Dental Surgery at the University of Maryland in 1953 where he won the Dr. Kelsey Award for professional demeanor. He was a member of the Gorgas Odontological Honorary Society, Psi Omega Fraternity, and the Phi Chapter of Omicron Kappa Upsilon - a national honorary dental society recognizing exemplary character traits. Dr. Walters served as an officer in the U.S. Navy as a dentist supporting the U.S. Marines in Korea and Japan. Dr. Walters began his dental practice in Monroe in 1955 and was known as the gentle dentist to multiple generations of local families. He continued practicing dentistry through 2012. On April 20, 1963, Percy married the love of his life, Nancy Kimball Ingram of Cheraw, SC. Although missing a golden anniversary by 6 months, they enjoyed a golden marriage for over 49 years. Percy was an active member of First Baptist Church of Monroe having served a Chairman of Trustees. He also served as President of the Optimist Club, President of the Cancer Society, and President of The Friends of Union County Library. Percy's hobbies included woodworking, tennis, photography, and cooking, but his favorite was creating memories and sharing stories with family and special friends. He completed his first novel, Scott's Ark, in 2005. Percy is survived by his wife Nancy and three children - son, Vann and wife Lori of Weddington, NC, son, Ingram and wife Missy of Monroe, NC, and daughter, Ann of Mint Hill, NC; and grandchildren Erin, Sarah, Griffin, Reagan, and Will who loved their Old Sea Crab. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews and cousin Blake Lee. The close family also includes special friends Jill Austin, Charlie and Tommy, Angie and Dean Baskins, and Kim Canty. He was predeceased by his parents, brothers Arthur, Louie, Cull, Vann, Roy, Bruce, Bill and sisters Matt and Ruth. The family extends a special thanks to the many healthcare professionals who gave loving support throughout his illness. A memorial service will be held Monday, November 12 at 11:00 am at First Baptist Church in Monroe, NC. A visitation and luncheon to celebrate Percy's life will be held after the service.
