Phyllis Moore Starnes

February 1, 1940 — February 16, 2023

On February 16, 2023 Phyllis Moore Starnes peacefully transitioned to Heaven where her Lord and Savior lovingly welcomed His "good and faithful servant" home.

Phyllis was born in Union County on February 01, 1940. She was the first child of the late Floyd and Lucille Moore.

Phyllis was a proud 1958 graduate of Mineral Springs High School. As senior class president, she organized class reunions and monthly luncheons for her beloved classmates for many years. Phyllis furthered her education at Kings College in the area of business. She worked as an administrative assistant for many years at Griffin Implement, later known as Gimco. Phyllis always took great pride in her work. Her boss once remarked that she “never made a mistake in anything she did.” Phyllis also worked as an administrative assistant at Wingate University where she delighted in serving both professors and students in the Humanities Department. Wherever she worked Phyllis was known for her kind, caring and encouraging heart and always going the extra mile to help out others.

Phyllis was a very active charter member of Calvary Baptist Church. Over the years she worked on many committees, served as the church Co-Treasurer, sang in the choir, helped in the children’s department and very faithfully served her Lord as a Sunday school teacher for over forty years. Phyllis was known as Calvary’s “candy lady.” Children, of all ages, could depend on her bringing a large bag of candy to church to share with them. She knew all their favorites and restocked her bag every week. Phyllis was also known for her beautiful handwriting. She put it to great use by sending thousands of birthday, Christmas, get well and encouragement cards to her family and many friends over the years.

Phyllis’ health greatly declined in recent months and she was no longer able to write or speak clearly. She still managed to win the hearts of her nursing staff with her beautiful smile, strong determination and sweet disposition.

Phyllis was a very loving, kind and generous woman who will be greatly missed by all of her family and friends.

She is survived by her husband, Jerry W. Starnes, son Jerry Brent Starnes, two brothers, Tommy Moore (Carolyn); Gary Moore (Lorraine); sister Sandra Moore, sister-in-laws, numerous nieces, and nephews as well as great nieces and nephews from both the Moore and Starnes families.

Phyllis is preceded in death by her parents as well as by her brother Terry Moore.

A funeral service, followed by a time of visitation, will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday, February 19, 2023 at Calvary Baptist Church, facilitated by the Rev. Eddie Price and Rev. Rod Yow. A private burial service will take place at Lakeland Memorial Park at a later time.
