Rebecca “Becky” Broome Mitchum born in Marshville, NC on October 2, 1955 passed away on September 24, 2026 after a fight with the horrible disease of Alzheimer’s. But that is not how she will be remembered.
Becky was a stunningly beautiful woman, inside and out, and she was deeply loved by so many. She retired from the public school system after a career as a speech pathologist, where she made an impact on more students and families than we will ever truly know.
She couldn’t walk into a local store without being stopped by a former student or a student’s parent, eager to tell her how much they loved her classes and how much fun they had with her. Becky always said she remembered them and I truly believe she did. She was the bright spot in so many students’ days. Whether she was playing games with them, bringing them their favorite snack, or reading with them on a bean bag chair, she had a way of making children feel special and loved, all while helping with their speech impairments.
Becky was also deeply involved in the church and touched countless lives through her faith and selfless service. She planned countless weddings, showers, and celebrations, always bringing her incredible eye for beauty and detail to everything she did. She could take the most mundane items and turn them into beautiful centerpieces and arrangements. She had a gift for creating the most unique gatherings, whether it was a private chef, an unexpected activity, or a thoughtful touch, it was sure to be something that no one else would have thought of.
If you ever visited Becky’s home, you knew immediately that she had a unique style for decor. Her home was beautiful, welcoming, and completely her. And then there was her cooking.
Becky was known for her home cooking, but don’t even think about asking her for a recipe. She didn’t have any. Her famous chicken and dumplings could only be replicated if you had the right coffee mug because, that was the measuring cup. If you were ever lucky enough to sit at her table or have a hand delivered meal, I can say confidently you enjoyed every bite! And I’m sure you miss it just as much as we do.
Becky was the quintessential hostess. No one in her family or circle of friends will ever quite compare. We will all try to fill her role, family gatherings at Becky’s house will never be replicated. There was simply no one like her.
One of Becky’s hidden talents was story telling. She created poems that had her family and friends cackling and gasping for breath. She would get requests for a Becky original poem for their events, and they never disappointed. She would come up with the most intricate, funny and dream worthy bedtime stories for her granddaughter, that should have been published. Big Monkey and Mr. Possum went on hundreds of adventures during the darkness of night as dreams were being created.
Becky was a wonderful mother and made an impact on many of Brooke’s friends. She was a stand-in mama during sleepovers when the midnight scaries snuck in. She was parent chaperone on many school trips, including a several day trip to Washington DC. Becky was coach for the cheerleading team and even rode 12 hours on an overpacked van to Orlando for Brooke’s dance team to perform. She sat in the stands for countless hours of t-ball games, softball games, gymnastics and dance competitions, recitals, football and basketball games and every school event you can imagine.
Becky leaves behind her loving family, including her devoted husband, Joe, who lovingly switched roles to become her caregiver during her final years. She also leaves behind her stepson, Adam, with whom she became especially close with over the past few years, as well as his brother, Aaron and daughter-in-law Melissa. She also leaves her daughter Brooke who was beyond blessed to call her mama and son-in-law Matthew, who is forever grateful for how Becky raised her daughter. Also on this side of heaven is her sister Patti, brother Tommy and sister-in-law Denise. There are also more extended family and friends than can be named. Just know she loved you all!
Joe built a beautiful house in 2002–3. They were married May 31, 2003. Becky moved in and beautifully decorated the house and made it home. A home where every room had a touch of Jesus. They shared adventures and countless memories. They love traveling and experiencing new places, but St. John US Virgin Islands held a special place in their hearts. They first visited the island on their honeymoon and visited year after year thereafter. Their years together were a beautiful collection of happy and eventful times that they navigated through together.
But perhaps the greatest blessing of Becky’s life was her granddaughter, Mae, whom she lovingly referred to as the “light of her life.” Those two shared a bond that was truly special. There will never be another Mommy B. Becky would drop everything for an overnight visit or would drive hours just to be at a school event. Mae would spend weeks at a time at Becky’s house. Helping Becky cook, going on boat rides, taking trips to the farmers market or just watching TV with Mommy B and Papa Joe.
Becky was preceded in death by her first husband Murray, Brooke’s dad. Also already in heaven are Becky’s parents Roy and Rachel Broome, her sister Debbie and brother-in-law Ray.
There are countless people that will grieve losing Becky - Miss Becky, Mama, or Mommy B. We will miss her beauty, her smile, her creativity, her cooking, her celebrations, her generosity, and most of all, the way she made people feel.
But even through our grief, we can rest peacefully knowing that Becky is rejoicing with Jesus. She has been reunited with those who went before her, and one day she will be waiting for us who remain on this side of heaven.
Love you, Mama. Until we meet again.
