Regina Barringer

March 14, 1918 — December 15, 2018

Regina Wilson Barringer died on Saturday, December 15, 2018. She was 100 years old. She was born to Henry Charles Wilson, Esq. and Arlene Fay Wilson of Danbury, Connecticut on March 14, 1918 in Peekskill, NY. She had a younger brother, Richard Henry Wilson, Esq. of Boston, Massachusetts who preceded her in death. She was often called by family and friends, the endearing nickname "Nean". Regina graduated from Skidmore College with an A. B. Degree in Clinical Laboratory Technique. She worked as Laboratory Technician at Yale Laboratory of the Fairfield State Hospital in Newton, Connecticut, and at the Danbury Hospital in Danbury, Connecticut. She continued her career in the Hematology Laboratory at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland until she was put in charge of the Tuberculosis Laboratory at Johns Hopkins Hospital. She accepted a position as Bacteriologist at Sealtest National Dairy in Baltimore upon leaving hospital work. Her career excelled well beyond the standard for her time. She was married to Phil Louis Barringer, MD. During their marriage they had five children, who survive her: Regina B. Lee, Eileen B. Mullis, Phil Louis Barringer, Jr., Martha B. Norwood and Mark Wilson Barringer. Surviving her also are thirteen grandchildren and seventeen great- grandchildren. One great-granddaughter preceded her in death. Mrs. Barringer was involved throughout her life with activities of her children. These encompassed a multitude of interests: religious programs, sports, music, girl and boy scouts, candy stripers, sewing, swimming and others. The everyday interests were, above all else, the interests of her children, a zoo of sorts, including but not limited to: (Pokey) pony, wolf spider, boa constrictor snake, dogs, cats, (Peewee) spider monkey, (Gruffy) goat, turtles, tropical fish, (LS) love bird, lizards, geese, rabbits. Each summer she and her children would spend a month in Danbury and Westport, Connecticut. This was a vacation all looked forward to throughout the year. Westport was a sanctuary for Mrs. Barringer. She grew up spending time at the residence of her Father, within walking distance to the beach. Many memories were made during this time. She loved the beach and having "salt in the air and sand in her hair". She made sure that her children would have special memories also. Mrs. Barringer had culinary and baking skills that set her apart. She would cook for days when the holidays came near. She was known for her pies. She could make a lemon meringue pie that was out of this world. Her apricot pie was one you would dream about. And the stickies, you just couldn't get enough. Her love for cooking could be tasted in everything she made. Mrs. Barringer was an active member and officer in many community activities and organizations. She was in the Union County Medical Society, the Medical Society of the State of North Carolina, the Monroe Woman's Club and the Monroe Garden Club. She was an interested and enthusiastic member of the Monroe Opera Guild. She was largely responsible for the establishment of the first Tiny Tot playground in Monroe (now Sunset Park). She was very active in the Parent-Teacher Association and was a grade mother for John D. Hodges and Walter Bickett. She held a position with the John D. Hodges PTA. She was a devoted Republican and volunteered at the voting precincts for years. She was active and held positions in lineage-based organizations: The Colonial Daughters of the Seventeenth Century, Colonial Daughters of the American Colonists (DAC) and Colonial Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). She would regularly host events at her home for these organizations. Regina Wilson Barringer was a pioneer in her own right. She shared her talents, education, patriotism, pride and understanding of a world that is forever changing. She will be remembered for many things--a truly special, kind, giving, loving lady! This world will miss her. There will be a service held for Mrs. Barringer at 11:00a.m. Friday, December 21, 2018 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 725 Deese Street, Monroe, NC.
