Richard Monroe Herring

February 12, 1938 — March 21, 2024

Richard Monroe Herring, 86, of Monroe, NC passed away on Thursday, March 21, 2024, surrounded by family. He was born in Monroe on February 12, 1938, son to the late Jesse Craven Herring and Louvenia Carroll Herring.


Richard is survived by his faithful wife of 65 years, Kathryn Barbee Herring of the home, sons Rick Herring and wife Trenda of Monroe, Steve Herring and wife Ann of Wilmington, and Kevin Herring and wife Lisa of Oakboro. Ten grandchildren; Tiffany, Kyle, Bethany; Stephanie, Tim, Ashli; Jesse, Chris, Bailey, and Drew; and their spouses. Twenty-two great-grandchildren and their spouses, and a great-great-grandchild on the way next month. Richard was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who left behind a lasting legacy to close to 50 lives within his immediate family.


Richard graduated from Walter Bickett High School in 1956 where he was affectionately known as “Polecat” to his friends. He served honorably in the US Navy. Richard later worked for over 25 years for Ma-Leck Industries in Wingate. In 1999, at the age of 61, Richard started H & H Wood Products in Wingate with his oldest son Rick, providing moldings and turnings to many home builders and cabinet makers in the surrounding area. Richard never retired but faithfully worked and provided for his family till the day he died. Richard loved the Lord and his family. He was always faithful to his church and taught the men’s Sunday school class for over 50 years.


The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm, on Sunday, March 24, 2024, at Gordon Funeral service and Crematory, 1904 Lancaster Ave, Monroe, NC 28112. The funeral service will be on Monday, March 25, 2024, at 11:00 am, at Memorial United Methodist Church at 1200 Miller Street in Monroe, officiated by Pastor Mike Scott and Pastor Jesse Herring of Oakboro. Burial will immediately follow at Lakeland Memorial Park.
