Obituary

Rick Barnett was born on September 30, 1994, at the Children' s Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Rick entered this world with a congenital heart condition and, despite its challenges, lived his life to the fullest. On November 24, 2025, he passed away at Duke University Hospital in Durham, North Carolina, as a result of complications related to his heart condition. Despite his heart condition, Rick possessed one of the biggest hearts imaginable.

He cared deeply for others, and anyone who met him instantly felt his warmth and friendship. He found joy in making people laugh, such as Robin Neal, with his jokes and playful humor, and his zest for life was nothing short of contagious. A true sports enthusiast, he found pure joy in wrestling, in cheering for the Ohio State Buckeyes, the Cincinnati Reds, and the Steelers, and in supporting the Charleston Dirty Birds as part of the beloved ‘Toast Section.’ Some of his happiest moments were spent at the ballpark with his best friend, Jacob Jennings, or at a wrestling match, but the moments he cherished most were those when he shared these passions with his son.

Rick is survived by the person he loved most, his son, Baldwin Orion Barnett, who brought immeasurable joy and purpose to his life and Baldwin’s mother Mia Fitzwater. He is also survived by his mother, Susan C. Keaton, and stepfather, William B. Keaton of Monroe, NC, who supported him through every chapter of life. As well as his sisters, Briana C. Barnett and Samantha B. Lansdale of Monroe, NC, who knew his humor, his kindness, and his spirit better than anyone, and his grandmother Donna Currey of Myrtle Beach, SC. Preceded in death by his father, Richard L. Barnett, Rick will be fondly remembered by many friends and coworkers for his spirited personality, his quick wit, and the smile that could touch the hearts of all who knew him.

The family is planning on having a celebration of life for Rick at the opening of the Dirty Birds baseball season in 2026.
