Richard Edwin Sims, Jr., 82, of Waxhaw, North Carolina passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on August 17, 2024, after a short battle with cancer.
Richard was born on January 22, 1942, to Richard Edwin Sims, Sr. and Inez Pierce Sims in Norfolk, Virginia. Following graduation from Benton Heights High School in Monroe, North Carolina, Richard briefly attended college in Mississippi before answering his country’s call to military service in 1964. Richard served in the U.S. Navy from 1964 to 1968, making two deployments to Vietnam on the USS Ranger (CV-61) and USS Coral Sea (CV-43) as a member of Attack Squadron 22.
Following his honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy, Richard began his over 40-year distinguished career with Swisher International, serving in sales roles of increasing responsibility reaching Sales Vice President before his retirement in 2004.
In 1966, Richard met the woman he would love for the rest of his life in Fresno, California. Richard and Glenna Michael (Woner) Sims were married on May 27, 1968, in Reno, Nevada. Glenna had two children from a prior marriage, Johnny Dean Sims and Gina Marie (Sims) Holley, that Richard loved as his own. In 1971, Richard and Glenna were blessed with the birth of a precious daughter, Michelle Rae Sims.
Richard is predeceased by his parents and his brother, David Lee Sims. He is survived by his wife, children and grandchildren, Christopher Morris Sims and Jonathan Richard Sims.
Graveside services will be held at Lakeland Memorial Park Cemetery, 1904 Lancaster Ave, Monroe, NC 28112, on August 22, 2024, at 1:00 pm.
