Richard "Sonny" Stafford

Richard Eugene “Sonny” Stafford, 81, of Monroe, passed away Friday, January 20, 2017, at Carolinas Medical Center – Union. Sonny was born in Mooresville, North Carolina on December 5, 1935, the son of the late Richard L. Stafford and Pauline Sherrill Stafford. Funeral services will be private. Sonny retired from Consolidated Freightways after a long career in the Trucking Industry. Sonny served in the United States Army, and was a proud Mason, formally a member of Joppa Lodge #530 in Charlotte, North Carolina. After retirement he enjoyed golf, fishing and time with family, especially Sunday afternoon football. Sonny is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Carole Stafford, three children, Christopher S. Stafford and wife Denise, Cindy Stafford-Jordan and husband Keith, and Candy Sanders and husband Lee, all of Monroe, a sister, Phyllis S. Carpenter of Mount Holly, Grandchildren, Josh Sanders (fiancé Jessica), Sydney Sanders, Harrison Stafford, Caroline Stafford, Nicholas Stafford, two Great Grandchildren, Mason Star Johnson, and Kaylee Ford. Also surviving are six nieces and nephews, including God-Daughter, Suzie C. Robinson. The family wishes to thank Dad’s friends and physicians, Dr. James Roberts, Dr. Grigor Badalyan, Dr. Ramarao Suresh, Dr. Eugene Kim, Dr. Scott Sweeney, and their caring staff members, as well as the staff of CMC-Union.
