Mr. Richard Edward Younts passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Thursday, April 17, 2025 after battling a long illness. He was 81 years of age. He was born on February 12, 1944 in Indian Trail, NC to the late Wayne Bleeze & Harriet Virginia Ross Younts. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Lou Ellen Secrest Younts, sister Frances Younts Secrest, brother Howard Younts, and great grandson Zachary Ryker Younts.
Richard grew up in Union County on Younts Rd. He graduated from Sun Valley high school in 1962, where he first met Lou Ellen. He went to college in Tennessee where he studied diesel mechanics. When Richard came back to NC, he reconnected with Lou Ellen and they married in 1965. Following in his fathers footsteps, he went to work for Duke Energy as a lineman, where he retired after 35 years. After retiring, Richard went back to work for Union County Transportation.
Richard “Pawpaw” loved spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He taught them the importance of having a relationship with God, nurturing a marriage and spending time outdoors. He loved life, was always happy and never complained once even at his sickest. He would pray every night for his family.
He loved to spend time fishing on the shores of the Outer Banks and hunting in the woods of the Carolinas. He never missed an annual fishing trip or a weekend to the hunt club with his son, grandsons and friends. He couldn’t start or finish his day without talking to his daughter on phone. Some of his other hobbies included gardening and tending to his goats. When he wasn’t outside, you could find him in his shop, tinkering with an old tractor or his fathers 1966 Ford truck. He was a lover of music and shag dancing, and would be the first to get on the dance floor with his granddaughters or request a guitar solo from his grandson and great granddaughter.
Richard was a long time member of Shiloh Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and a Sunday school teacher. He was a faithful follower of Christ. He loved to share bible stories with his family and pray over them.
He is survived by a son, Mark Younts (Tonya), a daughter Dawn Hancock (Calvin), five grandchildren, Zach Younts (Ashley), Megan Patterson (Zach), Tyler Younts (Amber) Cole Hancock (Laura), Hailey Deason (Zach), five great grandchildren, Raylyn Younts, Emma Younts, Paisley Younts, Rhett Younts, Laikyn Younts, brother Dale Younts, sister Shirley Roland (Don) and many nieces and nephews.
The family will have a private service at Shiloh Baptist Church at a later date.
