Rodger Gerald Long

Gerald Long, 65, who spent nearly his entire life in Union County before moving to Cherokee County in his final year, passed away Tuesday, June 10, 2025 at his home after a long and brave battle with lung cancer, surrounded by loved ones. He was proud of his faith and was a Christian who believed in the power of grace and second chances. He was born January 13, 1960 in Union County, NC and was preceded in death by his parents, Rodger and Linda Long.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Debra Long; children Kristina Long, Nicole Long, Joy Graves (Bryan), and Ray Long; sister Tammy Kelly (John); and niece Heather Carter. He was a proud grandfather to Haley Locklear, Briana Locklear, Alexis Long, Maggie Gibson, Summer Bryant, Kaylee Cornelius, Aidan Long, and Kaitlyn Long.

Gerald never missed a chance to tell stories about time spent with his father, Rodger, especially their hunting and fishing adventures. He worked alongside his family at Long’s Sporting Goods and Pawn Shop for most of his life, eventually taking over and running the store with his wife, Debra.

In his younger days, Gerald enjoyed dirt track racing and the thrill of competition. He was also a classic car collector who appreciated craftsmanship, chrome, and horsepower.

Gerald was one of a kind--tough, loyal, and full of life. He loved big and showed up for his family and friends without hesitation. As his health declined, he found peace in time spent with those he loved, his faithful dogs, and caring for his flowers. He had a green thumb like no other. His ferns were legendary, and somehow everything he touched seemed to grow better.

A funeral service will be held Monday, June 16, 2025 at 11:00 AM in Gordon Funeral Chapel, 1904 Lancaster Avenue, Monroe, NC and Gerald will be laid to rest at Lakeland Memorial Park following the service. The family will receive friends and relatives from 10:00 AM - 10:45 AM prior to the service.
