Roy Curtis Smith Jr, 93, of Monroe, NC, passed away on November 5, 2023, in Monroe. He was born on January 13, 1930, in Benton Heights, NC.
Roy, as he was commonly known, served in the US Navy on the USS Lloyd Thomas from 1948 to 1952 as the paymaster for the ship. He dearly loved his time in service.
During his lifetime, Roy owned the Superior Cleaners and RoMar Construction Company. He was a member of the Rotary Club of Monroe, where he served as their president. He also was a member of the Masons. Later in his life, he worked for the Union County School System until he retired.
Roy was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church of Monroe, where he raised his family to love God and serve others. He set the example through his regular attendance, serving as a deacon, and cooking meals for others.
Roy was an avid gardener who loved both flowers and vegetables. He regularly shared the bounty of his gardens with others. He also had a passion for cooking and often said, “If you leave my table hungry, it’s not my fault!”
He is survived by his wife, Hilda Horsman Smith; his daughters Deborah Smith Joyner and Elizabeth Smith Johnson and their families; Hilda’s children, Laura Horsman Hamby, Ashley Horsman Parks, and Marshall Horsman Jr; and numerous great and great-great-grandchildren.
Roy is joining in Heaven the love of his life, Mary Ann Stilwell Smith, and their children Roy C. Smith III (Trip), Mary Katherine Smith (KK), and William Smith.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Share and Care Committee fund of First Presbyterian Church of Monroe.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, November 8, 2023, at First Presbyterian Church, 302 E. Windsor St, Monroe, NC 28112. The family will receive friends and family following the service in the fellowship hall at First Presbyterian Church.
