Ruth Drew Ansley, 92, died June 11, 2016 in Monroe, NC at the home of her devoted daughter Nanette. Ruth was born in British India on February 4, 1924, to Major Edwin Joseph Drew and his wife Fanny Grierson Drew, from Deal, England. After his military service with the 10th Hussars, her father retired and served as chaplain for the Scottish Presbyterian Church in Mhow, India. Returning to England as a teenager, Ruth enlisted in the Royal Air Force in 1941 and served with Bomber Command as a teletype operator. Shortly before D-Day, she met her future husband, Charles Coke Ansley, who was stationed with the US Coast Guard. They married in Miami, Florida in 1947. Ruth and Charles went to Brazil in 1954 as Presbyterian missionaries in the Amazon region and served until 1963. After returning to the US, Charles served as a minister in churches throughout the southeast with Ruth by his side. They retired to Black Mountain, NC to be close to Charles’s mother, Caroline Walbek. Ruth also served as a volunteer with the North Carolina Literacy Council where she was honored by Governor James Hunt, as well as volunteering with the American Cancer Society. Ruth is survived by daughter, Nanette Saunders husband Joe of Monroe, NC, daughter, Caroline Gardner and husband Greg of Crisp, NC, daughter-in-law, Connie Ansley of Greenville, NC, son, Peter Ansley and fiancée Kendall McMahon of Black Mountain, NC, granddaughter, Susan McCarver and husband Junior of Indian Trail, NC, grandson, Andrew Stanton of Winston Salem, NC, great-grandson, Wesley Drew McCarver, brother-in-law, Van Walbek and wife Marlene and their children. She also leaves behind nieces and nephews, Leslie, Gay and Bruce Green of Australia and New Zealand. Ruth’s beloved husband Charles and sons, Drew and John Mark, predeceased her as well as her sister. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend to all that were blessed to have had their lives touched by her.
