Sandra "Sandy" Lee Brewer

Sandra “Sandy” Lee Brewer, 73, of Sumter, SC passed away on Thursday, April 17, 2025. She was born on July 15, 1951, daughter to the late Robert Howard Brewer and Ellen Bennilee Walkup Brewer of Monroe, NC.

Sandy graduated from Monroe High School in 1969 and received a BS degree from East Carolina University in the field of Special Education. She did graduate work at the University of South Carolina in the field of Learning Disabilities. She spent 33 years as an elementary special education teacher at Moore and Croswell Elementary schools in Sumter.

She was an active and dedicated member of the Philanthropic Educational Organization (P.E.O.) sisterhood in Sumter, SC since 2009.

She enjoyed many trips to the beach, reading, cooking, gardening, needlework, crosswords, and traveling. She played tennis for many years and spent a lot of time studying family history and was a member of the UDC.

One of her most enjoyable roles in life was being an aunt. Her niece and nephews lovingly named her “Sassy”.

Preceded in death by her father, Robert “Bud” Brewer and her mother, Bennilee Brewer of Monroe.

Sandy is survived by her sister, Sherry Council, brother-in-law Chip Council of Charlotte, nephew Robbie Council (Claire) of Waxhaw, niece Rebekah Lisk (Bradley) of North Wilkesboro, nephew Richard Council of Charlotte, great nephews Emmett Council and Ashton Council, and her bonus sister Gaile Rowell of Monroe.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the P.E.O International Chapter AA ℅ Gail Perozzi Treasurer 651 Chickasaw Drive Sumter SC 29150 or the American Cancer Society in memory of Sandra Brewer.

A service to celebrate Sandy’s life will be held at 2:00PM on Saturday, April 26, 2025, in the Chapel of Gordon Funeral Service and Crematory, with burial to follow in Lakeland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:00 PM until 1:45 PM at Gordon Funeral Service, 1904 Lancaster Ave, Monroe, NC 28112.
