Sara Craig Dickerson

Dateline: Monroe, NC Sara Craig Dickerson died on October 6, 2006 in Wilmington, NC where she lived for the past several years. Sara was born in Monroe, NC on October 10, 1918. Her parents were Anna Welsh Craig and Gillam Craig. Some of Sara’s fondest memories were of growing up as a “tomboy” on Washington Street in Monroe. She was a life-long member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church where she was active with the altar guild, Loaves and Fishes, and the memorial garden. She served on the boards of the North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro, Wingate University, and the Union County Public Library, where she established the Genealogy Room. Sara assisted with the governor’s highway beautification program, was a Girl Scout leader, and belonged to the Van Dyke Book Club. In 1938, after attending St. Mary’s in Raleigh and graduating from UNC Greensboro, she married Norvin Kennedy (“Dick”) Dickerson. Her beloved husband died in 1986. Sara is survived by her son, Norvin Dickerson, and his wife, Shannon, of Black Mountain, NC and her daughter, Ann, and her husband, Lee Whitehurst, of Wilmington, NC. Sara has six grandchildren, Christin Mahrlig, Ken Dickerson, Logan Dickerson, Alan Whitehurst, Brad Whitehurst, and Amy O’Quinn and nine great-grandchildren, Chase and Madison Mahrlig, Avery and Mason Dickerson, Preston, Charlotte and Samuel Whitehurst, Thomas Whitehurst, and Alexander O’Quinn. Her family will miss this strong, independent woman who influenced them and will continue to do so. Memorials may be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church (116 S. Church St., Monroe, NC 28111) or to the Union County Public Library. Burial arrangements are being handled by Gordon Funeral Cremation Service in Monroe.
