Shirley Clark Horton Surratt (Nanny) went home peacefully to be with her Lord and Savior Friday evening, December 16, 2011, at her residence, surrounded by her loving family, and was reunited in Heaven with her husband John Surratt, Jr. and son John Lee Surratt. She was born February 5, 1927 in Union County daughter of the late Otis and Florence Horton. Shirley loved her family and the Lord. She loved her church and was a longtime member of New Salem Baptist Church in Monroe. She always thought of others before herself and spent much time with her loving family. She enjoyed studying her Bible, working with her flowers and sitting on her porch swing where she would greet visitors with her beautiful smile. A celebration of her life will be held 2:00PM, Monday, December 19, 2011 in New Salem Baptist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery. She is survived by daughters, Brenda Kay Hunter and husband Phillip of Monroe, Linda Ann Troxler and husband Robert of Waxhaw, Irene Adele Griffin and husband Melvin of Monroe, sons Bobby Clark Surratt and wife Angie of Monroe, John Steven Surratt and wife Sandy of Monroe; a brother, Otis Horton, Jr. of Monroe; a sister Mary Horton Ray of Monroe; grandchildren, Amy (John) Little, Monica (Scott) Prizer, Jeff Hunter, John Troxler (Laura), Robby (Elizabeth) Troxler, Patty Troxler (Jake), Ricky (Holly) Surratt, Melanie Griffin (Josh), Adam Griffin (Leslie), Emily Surratt, Lyndsey Nance, and Riley Nance; six great-grandchildren; and a loving lab named Annie. The family will receive friends from 2:00-4:00 PM, Sunday, December 18, 2011 at Gordon Funeral Service Crematory, 1904 Lancaster Ave. Monroe, NC 28112. The family would like to thank the many friends and family for their thoughts and prayers during her illness.
