Speck Fowler

November 15, 1920 — February 7, 2017

Henry D. Speck Fowler, 96, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 7, 2017, and is now reunited with his soul mate Dot and his Lord and Savior. Mr. Fowler was born in Anson County, NC on November 15, 1920, the son of the late Effie Chloe Traywick and Henry Durrant Fowler. Mr. Fowler graduated from Benton Heights High School, attended NC State University and served his country in the U.S. Army for 3 1/2 years in New Guinea and the Philippines. Upon returning home, he met the love of his life, Dorothy Payne Shannon, whom he shared 70 years of marriage until her death in 2016. Speck was employed many years in the insurance industry with several different companies over the years and retired after 20 years of employment with General Telephone in Monroe. Speck loved the Lord and he and Dot were members of Benton Heights Baptist Church and many years later joined Oakland Baptist Church. A life like Speck's leaves a lasting fingerprint upon those he has touched and his legacy won't be forgotten. He was the perfect husband and father, always putting his family first and he loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren more than life itself. He loved to cook, always wanting to make sure everyone who entered his home had something to eat or drink; the kitchen was always open. Upon his death, he leaves a daughter, Sally Brantley and her husband, Chris; grandson, Travis and his wife, Modesty; granddaughter, Jessica Brantley and her fiancé, Dustin Putnam; and great-grandchildren, Jacob and Ella Brantley. He is also survived by his extended family that he loved like his own children, Martha Broome and her husband, Buddy; Mary Crisp and her husband, Bob; Gordon Shannon and his wife, Bobbi, and many loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Dot; brothers, Glenn, Walter, Jack, and R.B. Fowler; and sisters, OnaMae Diggs, Emma Burch, and Geraldine White, all of whom he spoke about up until his death. A special thanks to Speck's caregivers, Shannon Sullivan from Monroe and Karyn Brantley Smith of North Myrtle Beach, Martha and Buddy Broome, for always helping when needed; Amedisys Hospice of Myrtle Beach, Lower Cape Fear Hospice of Wilmington, and Shallotte Assisted Living in Shallotte. He received extra loving care towards the end of his life and for that his family is forever grateful. The family will visit with relatives and friends from 10:00 to 10:45 AM on Saturday, February 11, 2017, at Gordon Funeral Service, 1904 Lancaster Avenue, Monroe, NC 28112. The funeral service will follow in the Gordon Funeral Chapel at 11:00 AM on Saturday. Interment will follow in Lakeland Memorial Park, 1901 Lancaster Avenue, Monroe, NC 28112.
