Stanley Raymond Smith

Stan Smith, 85, passed away in Lynchburg, VA on Friday, March 27, 2020. Stan was born August 19, 1934 in Detroit, MI, son of the late Raymond and Marjorie Davies Smith. A Memorial service will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, August 20, 2022 at Saint Paul's Episcopal Church 116 South Church Street Monroe, NC 28112. The family will receive friends following the service in the fellowship hall. Stan is survived by his wife, Judy Smith, of 29 years; his children, Glenn Smith, Joann (Smith) St. Peter, David Smith, Chris Whitley, Tony Whitley, Kimberley (Whitley) Peters; 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Janet (Smith) Jones, and his brothers, Barrie Gillis and James Smith. He served in the Marine Corps in the early 1950’s and as a police officer for the Metropolitan Police Department, in Washington, DC, from 1959 to 1979, retiring at the rank of Lieutenant. In Stan’s earlier years he was actively involved in coaching and supporting youth activities, including Little League, Babe Ruth and Senior Babe Ruth baseball; Cub Scouts; Diving teams). In his retirement he spent many years serving the physically and mentally handicapped community in Northern Virginia and Lynchburg. He was also an active member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, in Monroe, NC. Serving as an usher, a member of the Bereavement Committee and volunteering many hours with Loaves and Fishes (feeding those in need).
