Susan Deborah Moenter

August 20, 1951 — November 7, 2022

Susan Deborah Moenter passed away on Monday, November 7, 2022, at the Elizabethan Gardens in Monroe, NC, where she had lived since 1998.

Susan was born on August 20, 1951, in Fremont NE, the 6th of 7 children born to Evelyn and Richard Moenter. In later years she always told people that she was born during a thunderstorm, a detail about her birth date that she found fascinating.

She is survived by her six brothers and sisters and their spouses: Sarah and Dan Potts of Grand Junction CO; Pete and Mary Moenter of Centerville OH; Annemarie Franklin and Wendy Carlos of New York City; Ellen and Ron Vilas of Monroe NC; Tom and Sharon Moenter of Williamson NY; and John and Terry Moenter of Gurnee IL. She is also survived by 9 nieces and nephews and a large extended family, including the angels on staff at the Elizabethan Gardens.

Susan attended elementary school in Fremont, and then moved in 1964 with her family to Storm Lake IA, where she finished school and began work at the Red Barn Work Activity Center. Favorite work contracts at the Red Barn were stitching cuffs on Cornhusker sleeves and sorting aluminum beverage cans. In 1983 she moved with her parents to Webster NY and worked for 10 years on mail sorting projects for Xerox at the Al Sigl Center in Irondequoit. She enjoyed bowling with the other Al Sigl workers and was the proud recipient of several “Most Improved Bowler” awards.

She came to live with her sister Ellen and her husband Ron in Monroe NC in 1993 and went to work at Union Diversified Industries, the facility for Adults with Developmental Disabilities on Walkup Avenue. She especially liked working on the Charlotte Plastics pipe contract, because if she worked hard, she could get “big numbers” on her production sheets.

Susan loved to play Bingo and Yahtzee and could often beat her siblings at Cribbage. She tuned in every night at 7:00 for Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. And Sunday afternoons in the fall were reserved for Panther football. She always put on her lucky Panther t-shirt and gathered her pennants and pompoms and cheered long and loudly for the Cats.

Her family will gather in the spring of 2023 at Lake View Cemetery in Pultneyville NY to bury Susan’s ashes beside her parents.

Susan, we have been separated by death, but we are together by love. Rest in Peace. Everything is okay now.

Memorials can be made to UDI (uniondiversifiedindustries.org) or the Alzheimer’s Association.
