Velma Pressley Helms

July 25, 1912 — January 12, 2007

Velma Pressley Helms of Monroe passed away from this earth into the loving arms of her Lord Jesus Christ on January 12, 2007. She was 94. Mrs. Helms was born on July 25, 1912 in Unionville, NC and was the daughter of the late Rufus A. and Dora Keziah Pressley. She was married to the late Floyd M. Helms for 60 years. The great joy of her life was her daily walk with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Mrs. Helms’ life was one of glorifying God and sharing His love with others. Her legacy is that of a godly homemaker who loved her family and raised her children in the love and admonition of the Lord. A Sunday School teacher for over 50 years, all who came into her presence received a blessing from her compassion and sweet spirit. Mrs. Helms believed that sharing the plan of salvation was like one beggar giving another beggar a piece of bread and let no one leave her home without her prayers for their salvation and peace. Throughout her life, and particularly in her later years, Mrs. Helms was known by all as a prayer warrior for her family, her church and her community. Her life was a living example of Christian faith and ministry. There is no sorrow in her passing for a saint of God has entered into her eternal reward. Her treasures were laid up in heaven. It is well with her soul. Mrs. Helms is survived by her son, Ted M. Helms and daughters and sons-in-law, Merle and Gene Ferguson, Carole and Frank King, and Marsha and Charlie Polk, all of Monroe. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Randy Ferguson and wife Donna, Gwen Griffin and husband Ken, Brandon Helms and Jason King all of Monroe. Cindy Williams and husband Eddie of Tennessee, Wendy Saty of Oregon, Ginger Polk of Waxhaw, Andy Polk of Washington, D.C. and twelve great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brothers Buren, Johnnie, Broughton, Fulton, Brice and Houston Pressley as well has her sisters Faire McGinnis and Mae Buff, half-brother R.A. Pressley as well as half-sisters Lorraine Long and Billie Dunn. She is survived by her half-brothers and sisters, David and Vann Pressley, Beulah Ryan and Sue Hilton. The family would like to take this opportunity to thank Mother’s “Dollies” from Monroe Manor for their kind and gracious care during these last months. She loved you all and your devoted care is a great comfort to her loved ones. Funeral services for Mrs. Helms will be held at West Monroe Baptist Church on Sunday, January 14 at 3:00. Interment will follow at Lakeland Memorial Park. Visitation will be Sunday at the church from 1:30 to 2:45 prior to the funeral service. The family will be at their Mother’s home on Saturday, January 13 from 11 am to 5 pm. The family requests that memorials be made to West Monroe Baptist Church family life center fund or to the donor’s charity of choice.
