Vincent Robert Hughes MONROE - Vincent Robert Vince Hughes, 75, passed away Saturday, March 9, 2013. He was born on June 7, 1937 in New York City, NY, son of the late Mathias Joseph and Mary Carle Hughes. He attended St. Helena's High School in N.Y. and graduated from Mount Saint Mary's College in Maryland in 1959 with a B.A. in Economics. He spent over 50 years in the textile and apparel industry and was founding partner and principal of Unity Knitting Mills and Carolina Apparel Group in Wadesboro, NC. He served as chairman of the board at Pawley's Pier Village in Pawley's Island, SC. He also served as President of the NC Alumni Chapter for Mount Saint Mary's College. He was a devoted parishioner of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, serving as a member of the Finance Council and the Building Committee, and also as an usher and Eucharistic Minister. He is survived by his wife Evelyn Glisson Hughes and his three children Pamela Hughes Ball (Bill) of Winston-Salem, NC, Kevin Joseph Hughes of Charlotte, NC and Julia Hughes Murphy (Michael) of Charlotte, NC, and his sister, Marita Hughes Kelly of Clearwater, FL. Vince is also survived by his four grandchildren William and Matthew Ball, and Katherine and Colin Murphy. He was preceded in death by his sister Maryellen Hughes Dunn. Vince loved spending time with his family at Pawleys Island, SC. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, March 14, 2013 at 11:00 AM in Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 725 Deese St., Monroe, NC 28112. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 at Gordon Funeral Service, 1904 Lancaster Ave., Monroe, NC 28112. Interment will be private.
