It is with very heavy hearts that we announce that Wanda Sue McCord, 75, of Huntersville, NC peacefully went to sleep and passed away on Friday, February 6, 2026. She was born in Mecklenburg County, NC on September 28, 1950, daughter of the late Leonard Stokley Lunsford and Bettie Sue Helms Lunsford. She is also preceded in death by a son, baby boy McCord.
Wanda is survived by a son, Jonathan McCord (Julie Fowler), daughter, Jennifer McCord, two brothers, Michael Lunsford (Sandra), Jeffrey Lunsford (Nancy), and two sisters, Sharon Wiggins (Stephen), and Arista Lunsford-Dunn (Christopher). She leaves behind many wonderful nieces and nephews and their families, as well as several of her cousins. Her children, siblings and her cousin Donna Gunter were especially loving and supportive as Wanda fought through her many illnesses.
Wanda was an extremely loving and devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, social worker (retired) and friend. People often complemented her natural beauty but it was her heart that was most wonderful! She was very selfless, loving others and putting their needs first even when she was struggling with her own failing health. Mom was the epitome of a fighter - she always did her best, persevered against all odds and never quit. As her body grew physically more frail her spirit grew stronger. Her faith in the Lord sustained her thru an extremely difficult battle with Lewy Body Dementia and other serious illnesses. The word used to describe her over and over amongst those who were blessed to know her was “inspirational.” She prayed until her last moments in this world and she BELIEVED the Lord was with her and was her source of strength. Wanda was never stronger than in her last weeks of life in this world, as evidenced by her will to live and desire to continue to love and encourage all who she received in frequent family visits. To say she will be missed is an incredible understatement. We love you so much Mom, sister, friend!
Although our hearts truly ache over our loss, we rejoice and thank the Lord for giving Wanda comfort, rest, and total peace as she begins her eternity with our Lord and our Christian family who are already in Heaven. May God reunite us all again in His time.
We want to thank everyone who visited, prayed continually, and showered Wanda with love and kindness. We especially thank our devoted family and the Hospice staff who lovingly provided comfort care and encouragement. We also want to give a special thank you to Dr. Patel and all of the Atrium Huntersville Oaks staff for their compassionate care, especially those who took the time to get to know Mom and understand her condition. May the Lord bless all who gave their love and support to our precious Mom!
