Wilbert Fitzhugh Massengill (Bill), 96, of Monroe, passed away Friday, June 3, 2016, at his residence. He was born November 5, 1919, in Johnson County, NC to the late Jacob Massengill and Mary Ford Massengill A veteran of WWII, Mr. Massengill served as a radio operator in the US Army Air Force with the 11th Fighter Control Squadron where he rose to the rank of staff sergeant. He was stationed on the West Coast and in the Aleutian Islands (Amchitka). After the war he returned to Wilson, NC to raise a family and work in oil distribution until he retired and moved to Monroe in 1986. He is survived by his wife, Grace Ross Massengill; daughter, Jan Glover and husband, Bucky, of Monroe; grandchildren, Allen Glover, Emily Cook, and Scott Glover; and great-grandchildren, Anna and Elliot Glover, Grayson, Elijah, and Cody Cook. The family will receive friends and relatives from 10:00 to 10:45 AM on Monday, June 6, 2016, at Central United Methodist Church. The funeral service will follow at 11:00 AM in the Chapel at Central United Methodist Church. Burial with Military Rites will follow in Lakeland Memorial Park.
