Wiley Kenneth Helms, 86, passed away Monday, July 12, 2021. He was born on June 1, 1935 in Union County, NC, son of the late Duke Helms and Vera Lomax Helms Flynn and step-father, Johnny Flynn. Mr. Helms graduated from Benton Heights High School in 1953. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and a Union County Sheriff’s Deputy. He served the state of North Carolina as a magistrate and drove for Union County Transportation. Kenneth was an avid fisherman and loved to cook. He was also a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Funeral services will be Friday, July 16, 2021 at 2:00 PM in Gordon Funeral Chapel, 1904 Lancaster Avenue, Monroe, NC 28112. Mr. Helms is survived by his wife, Nancy Bailey Helms; son, Michael Thomas Helms of Charlotte; daughter, Susan Broome Baskins (Al) of Pineville; grandchildren, Heather Blackwelder (Andrew), Maegan Griffin (Russell), Cassie Helms and Alyssa Helms; daughter-in-law, Dawn James Helms; great-grandchildren, Reagan Blackwelder, Natalie Blackwelder, David Blackwelder, Bo Blackwelder, Wyatt Griffin and Wade Griffin and sister, Brenda Clark.
