William "Bill" Huey

William E. Bill Huey U.S. Army Air Corps Veteran WAXHAW - William Earle Huey, 91, died Saturday June 14, 2014. Born Feb 17, 1923 he was the son of the late Earnest Huey and Bertha Ratchford Huey. He was married to his beloved wife Marilyn Roberts Huey of Lancaster, S.C. for almost 68 years. He was a member of Tirzah Presbyterian Church for more than 80 years and served for many years as a church Elder. Bill was also a member of Waxhaw Masonic Lodge No. 562 and American Legion Post 208. Bill was a World War II veteran having served in the European Theater as a 21 year old TSgt and B-24 Liberator flight engineer. During his service Bill earned four Air Medals and a Purple Heart for an injury sustained while abandoning his damaged aircraft over France. He would rarely discuss his wartime experiences as a member of the 68th Bomb Squadron Flying Eightballs except in the presence of his crew members who have all gone on before. He continued in the Reserves until 1952. Following the war Bill returned to NC and married Marilyn in 1946 working several short term jobs before joining the US Postal Service. He was best known throughout Union County for his many years of running the 72 mile daily Rural Route #2, about 50% dirt roads at the time, in his Volkswagen. Many of his patrons were friends and neighbors that he regularly checked on even in the daily haste to finish his appointed rounds. During the 70's he served for many years on the Board of Directors of the then Union Memorial Hospital in Monroe. He retired from the Waxhaw Post Office in 1978, working for many more years in security jobs for Duke Energy and Tyson Foods, with a short and enjoyable time as campground manager at Cane Creek Park. Throughout his lifetime Bill was an avid fisherman who enjoyed his hobby with friends and family until his affirmities of age and Alzheimer's forced him to put the cane pole away and pass his catfish tire traps on to others. He was a hero and example to his grandsons. Survivors include his wife of Waxhaw, N.C.; two sons William E. Billy Huey, Jr. of Waxhaw, and Larry Huey, Col. USAF Retired of Grapevine, TX; three grandchildren, Brian Huey, Kevin Huey, and Kyle Huey; great grandchildren, Brittany Huey, Haley Huey, and William Garcia Huey. Bill was predeceased by his youngest son Thomas Alexander Hoss Huey in 1974 and his sister Sarah Edna Huey King. The family will hold a visitation at Gordon Funeral Service Crematory., 1904 Lancaster Ave. Monroe, NC 28112 on Tuesday June 17, 2014 from 6-8pm. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Wednesday June 18, 2014 at Tirzah Presbyterian Church conducted by Rev. Canessa Stafford with burial in the Church Cemetery. Following the graveside service all friends and family are invited to fellowship and refreshments in the Tirzah Fellowship Hall. Memorials in lieu of flowers please.
