William Douglas Mackay, 71, of Monroe passed away Saturday, September 10, 2016, at his home. Mr. Mackay was born December 12, 1944, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the son of the late Douglas Field Mackay and the late Carrie May Englebach Mackay. He was a graduate of Northeast High School and Temple University, where he earned an associate’s degree in electronics. A veteran of the U. S. Navy, he served on numerous ships, receiving numerous personal commendations and unit citations. While serving in the United Kingdom, he worked with NATO and Her Majesty’s Government, attaining the rank of electronics technician petty officer first class before being honorably discharged. He was a member of the American Legion Post 208. A lifetime member of the Audio Engineering Society, his varied civilian career included positions at WRCV-TV, an NBC affiliate, in Philadelphia, and WDVR radio in Philadelphia, to overseeing audio recordings of numerous organ and orchestra recitals, including a session of Eugene Ormandy conducting the Philadelphia Orchestra and a performance by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. He retired from Fujitsu as a senior field engineer. Mr. Mackay is survived by his beloved wife of 48 years, Jeanne Angermann Mackay of Monroe; four sons, Daniel Mackay of Stallings, NC; Jonathan Mackay and wife Melinda of Wingate, NC; Steven Mackay and wife Jenn Burleson Mackay of Fairlawn, Virginia; and James Mackay and wife Shannon of Unionville, NC; four grandchildren, Kathryn Ann Mackay, Joshua Robert Mackay, Levi James Mackay, and Luke Jacob Mackay; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Malcolm Mackay and wife Barbara of Southington, Connecticut; and Harry Mackay and wife Ruth of Avondale, Pennsylvania; and several nephews and a niece. Services for Mr. Mackay will be held 2 p.m., Thursday, September 15, 2016, at Central United Methodist Church with burial to follow at Lakeland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Wednesday, September 14, from 6 p.m. to 8 pm. at Gordon Funeral Service Crematory, 1904 Lancaster Ave., Monroe, N.C. 28112.
