William Emmett Mastin

August 31, 1931 — July 8, 2018

Mr. William Emmett Mastin, son of the late Charles Mastin and Irene Humphries Mastin, was born on August 31, 1931 in Paris, Kentucky. He quietly departed this life, with family present, on Sunday, July 8, 2018 at Novant Medical Center in Matthews, North Carolina. He was united in holy matrimony to Janice Rae Sykes on June 25, 1961 in Ewing, Kentucky. Bill was an active member at Lakeview Baptist in Monroe, NC and was a past president of the Senior Adult Sunday School Class. He enjoyed his Sunday school classmates dearly and enjoyed spending time with them in class and participating in special trips and events. Bill was a proud United States Veteran and served 9 years in the Marines and Navy. After his service, he became a dedicated employee of Kmart for 36 years and served as manager of many locations from Virginia to North Carolina. He was instrumental in opening numerous stores across the Southeast, and his employees still reminisce about his work ethic and commitment to Kmart. As dedicated as he was at work, he had the same work ethic at home. Bill loved being outdoors and staying busy by gardening, yardwork, millwork, and repairing lawn mowers. He loved to travel, visit family, and hit a few antique shops along the way, collecting Hull pottery. Bill loved supporting the Charlotte Hornets, Carolina Panthers, the Duke Blue Devils, and even the Dallas Cowboys. He had a love a for good country meal, especially when the food came from his own garden. The family would love for you to remember the great life that he led and the love we all shared. We are all at peace knowing he is with his beloved, Janice. His wonderful life will forever be cherished in the lives of his son Charles Ray Bowling and daughter-in-law Elizabeth Bowling of Kannapolis, NC; granddaughter Ginger Bowling Salmon and husband Richard of Charlotte, NC; grandson Jason Walker Gay and wife Michele of Concord NC; granddaughter Melanie Katherine Anderko and husband Keith of Rockhill, SC. He was blessed with eight great-grandchildren: Avery Grace Salmon, Parker Alexis Salmon, Jason Walker Gay, Jr., Kayleigh Ann Gay, Joseph Walker Yakabowskas, Elijah Darrel Anderko, Tristan Edward Anderko, and Lukas Charles Anderko. Bill was predeceased by his wife, Janice Mastin and sister, Pauline Mastin of Ohio. Visitation will be held on Friday, July 13 from 1:00-1:45 pm, followed by Services at 2:00 at Gordon Funeral Service Crematory, 1904 Lancaster Avenue in Monroe NC, with military honors. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his honor to the Senior Adult Sunday School Class of Lakeview Baptist Church, 4601 Concord Hwy, Monroe NC 28110.
