William Hood Mcleod

April 24, 1923 — November 13, 2014

Dr. William Hood “Bill” McLeod of Monroe, N.C., died November 13, 2014 at the Hospice House in Monroe, N.C. He was 91 years old. He is survived by his wife Nell; daughters Adele Willard, Julie McLeod and Laurie Tardif; and grandchildren Walker McLeod Bryant, Erin Tardif and Garrett Tardif. A memorial service will be held 11:30 AM, Monday, November 17, 2014 at First Presbyterian Church in Monroe in the sanctuary. Visitation will be in the fellowship hall starting at 10:00 AM Bill was a lifelong resident of Monroe. He graduated from Monroe High School in 1941 and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1943-1946. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and played trumpet in a jazz band on nights and weekends. He earned his DDS degree in 1957 and opened a dental practice in downtown Monroe; he retired from dentistry after 40 years of practice. Bill was well-known in the community, serving in leadership positions with the Optimist Club, Union County Board of Health, HASOBs, Union County Literacy Council, Academy of General Dentistry and N.C. Dental Society. He received many accolades for his service at First Presbyterian Church in Monroe as a deacon, elder and session leader. He enjoyed fishing, cooking, music and woodworking. In 2009 he published a book, “The Way It Was,” detailing life in Monroe from the 1920s through mid-50s. He is best remembered for his strong faith in Jesus Christ; his quick wit and love of a tall tale or good prank; being a loyal and humble friend and mentor; and always being ready to help anyone who needed it. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the building fund at First Presbyterian Church in Monroe, 302 E.
