Monroe, NC Mr. William Ormand (Bill) McWhorter, age 68, died Thursday, April 22, 2010, at the McWhorter House of Hospice of Union County. He was born in Union County, NC on February 12, 1942, son of the late William Roscoe McWhorter and the late Lenola Couick McWhorter Clayton. In addition to his parents, Mr. McWhorter was preceded in death by his sister, Lorraine McWhorter Ferguson in 1998, step-father Charles R. Clayton and sister-in-law, Evelyn C. Aycoth. Mr. McWhorter retired from Celanese Corporation in Charlotte, NC in 2000 after 32 years of service. After retirement, he worked as a part-time employee of Union County Transportation and thoroughly loved his “second career”. He was a graduate of the class of 1959 at Mineral Springs High School and enjoyed keeping up with his classmates. A memorial service to celebrate Mr. McWhorter’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m, Sunday, April 25, 2010 at Bethlehem United Methodist Church, 5300 Nesbit Rd., Waxhaw, NC 28173 conducted by Rev. Howard Fleming and Rev. Steve Phillippi. Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Jane Cook McWhorter, his daughter, Susan McWhorter Starnes and husband Scott of Raleigh, NC and his grandson, Alexander Reece Starnes of Raleigh. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Earl J. Ferguson of Charlotte and his nephews, Alan Ferguson and wife Nancy of Liberty, NC and Barry Ferguson and wife, Sandra of Mint Hill, NC and their son Will. Also his brothers-in-law, Ray Cook and wife Violet and Waymon Cook and wife Barbara all of Monroe. His nephews and niece, Billy Cook and wife Julie, Bryan Cook, Tony Cook, Rusty Cook and wife Beth, Ronnie Cook and wife Melissa, Aaron Cook and wife Alison, Cameron Richardson and wife Dolly and Monica Richardson all of Monroe. The family will receive friends Saturday, April 24 from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Gordon Funeral and Cremation Service, 1904 Lancaster Ave., Monroe, NC 28112. Special thanks are extended to Dr. Gregory Brouse and the staff of Carolinas Cancer Associates at CMC-Union and the staff at Hospice of Union County for the compassionate care they extended to Mr. McWhorter and his family.
